Council of Arab Central Banks Governors

The Governors of the Arab Central Banks and Monetary Authorities began to meet formally in the early 1970s, first in Cairo in September 1972, followed by Baghdad in February 1975, and then in Amman in July 1978.

Who We Are

The Council of Governors of the Arab Central Banks and Monetary Authorities was established under the auspices of the League of Arab States to strengthen cooperation among Arab central banks and monetary authorities and enhance coordination on monetary and financial issues of common interest.

The Governors began meeting formally in 1972, with the Council adopting its current framework in 1978. In 1980, the Council approved its procedural rules and designated the Arab Monetary Fund as its Technical Secretariat. The Council is supported by a Permanent Bureau responsible for following up on decisions and preparing annual meetings.

Today, the Council serves as the principal regional platform for cooperation among Arab central banks and monetary authorities, promoting dialogue, coordination, and the exchange of expertise across the Arab region.

What We Do

The Council promotes cooperation and coordination among Arab central banks and monetary authorities and coordinates Arab positions on regional and international monetary and financial issues through:

  • Preparing and adopting the Unified Arab Statement presented on behalf of the Arab Group at the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

  • Discussing and approving the Joint Arab Economic Report prepared by Arab financial institutions.

  • Supporting the exchange of experience and expertise among Arab central banks.

  • Discussing economic, monetary, and banking developments at the regional and international levels.

  • Overseeing the work of the Arab Committee on Banking Supervision and the Arab Committee on Payment and Settlement Systems.

  • Supporting regional initiatives, including financial inclusion and the development of regulatory frameworks and payment systems.

  • Providing a platform for dialogue and coordination among Arab central banks and strengthening cooperation with Arab, regional, and international financial institutions.
